The Most Important Relationship You Have Is With Your Body

How important is it to have a healthy relationship with your body? I just went on a detox retreat for a couple of days at The Art of Living Center in the mountains of Boone, NC. Detoxing sounds fun right? Actually, it was a breath of fresh air. Literally.

Not only did I not have to cook, but I was served vegetarian meals three meals a day! I even hiked uphill to eat them in the mountaintop dining hall. No lie, I think I lost weight hiking through the trails just to eat three times a day! Let’s talk about the amazing vegetarian food!!! I’m not saying you should be a vegetarian but I certainly felt amazing eating it.

I agree with Michael Pollen whose philosophy is: “Eat food, not too much, mostly plants.” (His books, In Defense of Food and The Omnivorse’s Dilemma are great reads by the way.)

The key here is mostly plants. This is a philosophy I’ve always stood by. Food means “real” food. I’ve always made whole food my main food consumption philosophy: eat whole food, not processed boxed and bagged “fake food” with a bazillion ingredients.

We are all always bombarded with this diet and that diet.

Drink kombucha and apple cider vinegar, eat vegan, make sure to get your greens, only eat protein, don’t eat protein, juice lemon in your water but make sure it’s purified, don’t drink wine, wait, a glass of red wine is ok or is it? It’s so damn confusing! I swear I routinely want to give up with all the conflicting information floating around.

I’m not here to give you advice but on the contrary to encourage you to [ctt_hbox link=”IJs6C” via=”no” ]let YOUR body tell YOU what is best for it and get as much education as you can to customize what is right for you. One size doesn’t fit all. No one’s body is the same and no diet will EVER work the same for everyone.[/ctt_hbox]

After talking with an Ayurvedic doctor, getting treatments and eating an Ayurvedic diet for a few days, I realized I truly need all these modalities and knowledge in my life. Although I have a large amount of all three doshas, Pitta, Vata and Kapha, my predominant dosha is pitta, which is fire and totally type A. Next in line is Vata which is also Type A. That was no shock.

Your body needs different things in different seasons

The doctor said I had enough of Vata that I should eat that diet in winter. I found this fascinating. This knowledge is looking at body types to determine what foods are best for you and it’s thousands of years old. When I got home I questioned my Chinese doctor who does acupuncture about what I’ve learned the past couple years about Ayurveda. He agreed I am a pitta dominant constitution but he just called it fire. He described my body type very similarly and agreed I shouldn’t have sour foods, like tomatoes, especially raw, a lot of lemon or sour fruits, fermented foods, spicy foods, pungent foods or hot peppers. What I need to eliminate are foods that heat my firey body. So there goes the chocolate and red wine. Just kill me now.

What is interesting to me is how eating right for your dosha can help eliminate inflammation, headaches and other issues we don’t think about food causing especially when everyone is telling you to drink kombucha and vinegar with lemon. All of which isn’t that great for me.

I took what I learned in Ayurveda combined it with Chinese medicine philosophies and then looked at the philosophy about eating right for your blood type

I don’t agree with everything each modality has to offer but in researching all these, I know that combining these ancient philosophies helps me to understand my body so I can feel better.

After the Ayurvedic doctor told me that raw tomatoes, vinegar, and fermented foods were not good for me, I told her how I never liked them anyway. In fact, most of what she described that I shouldn’t eat, I already wasn’t having very much. She ensured me that my body knows what is right for me. After all, there is no better guidance than your own intuition. When your intuition is sharp, it will tell you. Guess how you keep your intuition sharp? Taking care of your body. Health is a circle. You get what you put in. If you exercise your muscles and your brain, get the right amount of rest, keep stress low with meditation and mindfulness and eat for fuel there is a high probability that you will feel awesome.

[ctt_hbox link=”uF1Sa” via=”no” ]The most important relationship you have is with your body. Wouldn’t you agree? When you don’t feel good, nothing else matters. [/ctt_hbox] Most of the time if I eat in a restaurant, I just don’t feel that good after. If I eat processed foods, too much sugar, white bread, heavy meats or fast foods, I don’t feel good. And let me tell you, I want to feel good all the time. Don’t you? Food is the fuel keeping our body performing at its peak.

I’m dying to know about your thoughts and experience with Ayurveda, Chinese Medicine or eating right for your blood type. Make sure to leave a comment and share your story. I know we can help each other in the community to learn and grow through each other’s experiences so make sure to share yours.

And hey, eat your greens,
